John H. Wootters Crockett Public Library
Summer Reading Program 2007
Sail Away with Books!

Crockett Public Library
ends Its 2007 Summer Reading Club

Over 200 children registered for the
John H. Wootters Crockett Public Library
Texas State Reading Club that the library sponsors every summer.
The theme in 2007 was “Sail Away with Books!”
Eligible participants were children ages 5 through 12.
They met every Tuesday in June and July from 2:30 to 4:30 PM.
The only requirement was a library  card.

During the 7-week program, adult volunteers read to 6 different age groups
for 1 hour each week. Teen volunteers directed the smaller kids.
Piney Woods Fine Arts Association provided entertainment
by arranging for 3 of the artists from their Concert in the Park Series
to appear at the library. In addition, The Missoula Children’s Theatre
gave a workshop on applying theatrical make-up.
Guy and Pipp Gillette performed one week.
Pipp brought mostly stringed instruments
and Guy brought his “bones.” Trixie Bond,
a professional magician, rendered a lively and fun show.
Cheryl Lenzi, a local artist, gave art classes for 4 weeks
and brought her parrot, Pancho for the children to sketch.

On the last Tuesday of the Summer Reading Program, the children celebrated with a party. Sandwiches, chips and drinks were served. Every child that met the reading requirements was rewarded with an age appropriate book and an educational game or art project. They were presented with a personalized certificate signed by Governor Rick Perry. Each package also contained coupons from numerous businesses, such as restaurants and movie rentals.

Children in every income group who read six or more books over the summer gain more in reading achievement than children who do not read. Studies have shown that more than any other public institution, including the schools, the public library contributes to the intellectual growth of children during the summer.

John H. Wootters Crockett Public Library provided a notable pastime for children this summer. The same type of program will be offered next year.

The John H. Wootters Crockett Public Library would like to thank the
following individuals and businesses for their kindness and generosity.
Their contributions, whether service or monetary, made the
2007 Summer Reading Club an entertaining and meaningful success.
We applaud you!
