Public Library offers PreGED Course

This fall, the John H. Wootters Crockett Public Library will offer its fourth PreGED course.  The course will begin Tuesday, September 5, 2006, and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.   Anyone who has a library card and is interested in receiving some basic instruction before preparing for the GED test can sign up for this class.  Pre-enrollment is required.

Materials start at a fifth-grade reading level and assess the strengths and weaknesses of each student.  Also, enrollment is limited so each student can receive personal attention.  All five testing areas of the GED, plus work on critical thinking skills, are covered throughout the school year.  The fall session will last eleven weeks and will include Language Arts Writing, Language Arts Reading, and Critical Thinking Skills.  Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics will be taught in the spring.

A certified teacher, Beverly Mize, will teach the course.  Anyone interested can go by the library on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday afternoons to get more information or to enroll.  Interested people can also call the library any time Monday-Thursday at 544-3089 for additional information.

A computer program is now available for individuals who are ready for independent preparation for the GED test, and the library has several GED books with subject preparation and practice tests that can be checked out.

Crockett Public Library is located behind the Monroe Crook House on Houston Avenue two blocks from the square across from the Callaway-Allee Funeral Home.  Library hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p. m.   However, the library will be closed Monday, September 4 for Labor Day.
